The US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has stated that triglycerides are among the most common types of fat in the body, formed from the foods people eat, especially butter, oils, and other fats.

The institute added that excess calories not immediately needed by the body are converted into fat and stored as triglycerides in fat cells, to be released later when energy is required, according to CNN.

While some triglycerides are important for health, the institute warned that high levels in the blood may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Elevated triglyceride levels can raise the risk of cardiac complications and sudden inflammation of the pancreas, known as acute pancreatitis. Extremely high levels may also cause changes in the blood vessels of the eyes, making them appear abnormal, as well as skin damage on the back, chest, arms, and legs, short-term memory loss, and enlargement of the liver and spleen.

Causes include alcohol consumption, side effects of certain medications, diabetes, thyroid disorders, some kidney and liver conditions, and certain genetic disorders.

Triglyceride levels can be managed by exercising for at least 30 minutes daily, reducing food intake—especially fatty foods—increasing dietary fiber, avoiding sugary foods such as sweets, and choosing foods with a low glycemic index, such as legumes and whole grain products.

It is also recommended to eat more fish, particularly those rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, tuna, and trout, reduce alcohol consumption, lose excess body fat through healthy eating and regular exercise, quit smoking, and manage related health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
