Chinese scientists identify new tick-borne virus causing flu-like symptoms

Scientists in China have identified a new tick-borne virus, named 'Asian longhorned tick nairovirus' (ALTNV), which belongs to the orthonairovirus group. The virus causes flu-like symptoms, fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, low platelet counts, and signs of liver involvement.

A recent study, reported by the New York Post, found the virus in 10.4% of 3,163 patients who had been bitten by ticks. Infected individuals experienced fever, muscle pain, and sometimes respiratory symptoms.

Researchers also observed that patients infected with both ALTNV and Dabie bandavirus (DBV) were more likely to suffer respiratory problems and kidney complications. Seven of these patients (18.4%) died during the study period.

Dr. Sharon Nachman, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Stony Brook Children's Hospital in New York, noted that low platelet counts can lead to bleeding, and the fatality rate among those with severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome reached around 30%.

She emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis to distinguish between tick-borne viruses, given the similarity of symptoms and the difficulty of treatment.

The study explained that treatment is mostly limited to supportive care, as there are no effective antiviral drugs for tick-borne viruses, and inappropriate antibiotics should be avoided.

Nachman advised preventive measures such as wearing long clothing, using insect repellents, and regularly checking the skin after being in areas where ticks may be present.

The study's findings were published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.
