Heavy thunderstorms and flash floods expected across southern and western Saudi Arabia Monday

The National Center for Meteorology, in its weather report for Monday, September 28, 2026, forecast continued moderate to heavy thunderstorms leading to flash floods, accompanied by hail and strong winds, over parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah regions.

The report added that light to moderate rain is expected over parts of Madinah, while rain-bearing thunderclouds may form over the southern parts of the Eastern Province, with a chance of fog in these areas.

Additionally, strong surface winds stirring dust and sand are expected over parts of the Northern Borders and Al-Jouf regions, as well as the coastal areas of Tabuk.

Sea conditions and winds

The report stated that surface winds over the Red Sea will be northwesterly to northerly at speeds of 20–40 km/h, and southwesterly to northwesterly at 10–30 km/h, possibly exceeding 50 km/h with thunderclouds. Wave heights will range from half a meter to one and a half meters, rising above two meters during thunderstorms. The sea will be light to moderate, becoming rough with thunderclouds.

In the Arabian Gulf, surface winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly at 10–25 km/h, and northeasterly to easterly at similar speeds. Waves will reach half a meter to one meter, with slight sea conditions.
