Saudi Arabia plays key role in global peace and security, says UN spokesperson

United Nations Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric has affirmed that Saudi Arabia plays a significant role in regional and global security and peace, highlighting its prominent contributions to supporting political solutions to regional conflicts. He noted that these efforts help open channels for dialogue, reduce tensions, and achieve lasting peace.

Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Dujarric welcomed Saudi Arabia’s leadership, alongside France and other partners, in rallying international support through the high-level international conference for a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-state solution, as well as the New York Declaration. He stressed the importance of turning this support into sustainable and tangible action.

Support for the Middle East peace process

The UN spokesperson explained that the most practical step to advance peace in the Middle East and implement the two-state solution is to establish a credible political process that leads to ending the occupation and the creation of a Palestinian state. This, he said, must be backed by effective measures to preserve the viability of the two-state solution in line with international law, UN resolutions, and previous agreements.

Dujarric emphasized the need to halt settlement expansion and reverse annexation measures that undermine the future viability of a Palestinian state, as well as to strengthen Palestinian institutions and restore the Palestinian Authority’s financial sustainability.

Saudi efforts in humanitarian and development issues

Dujarric highlighted the importance of implementing a comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza, ensure sustained humanitarian aid, support recovery, and chart a path toward unified Palestinian governance. He stressed the necessity of keeping Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, politically, economically, and geographically united.

He also noted Saudi Arabia’s role in hosting major UN and international events over the past two years, including the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), the Internet Governance Forum, the General Conference of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization. Additionally, he mentioned global conferences such as the Future Investment Initiative, the International Mining Conference, and the International Labor Market Conference.

Praise for upcoming events and future platforms

The UN spokesperson commended the major events Saudi Arabia is set to host in the coming years, such as the World Data Forum in November 2026, the World Water Forum in 2027, Expo Riyadh 2030, and the FIFA World Cup in 2034.

He also pointed to Saudi Arabia’s role in launching multilateral platforms, including the Digital Cooperation Organization, which emerged from its G20 presidency in 2020, and the World Water Organization, established in 2025.

Saudi Arabia’s role in humanitarian work

Dujarric stated that Saudi Arabia is among the world’s top donors, providing 94% of its official development assistance in 2023 bilaterally, amounting to nearly $5.47 billion, according to OECD data. He emphasized the importance of turning solidarity into practical support for those affected by crises by providing food, healthcare, and education.
