Saudi medical team removes rare desmoid tumor from patient’s breast

A multidisciplinary medical team at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, has successfully removed a rare desmoid fibromatosis tumor from the breast of a Saudi patient. The tumor measured 15 by 14 centimeters and weighed 236 grams, extending into the chest wall muscles. This rare case required a precise surgical intervention and collaboration across several medical specialties.

Dr. Areej Al-Humaid, consultant in general and breast surgery and head of the medical team, explained that desmoid tumors are rare and can invade surrounding tissues and muscles. She noted that the team, "by the grace of God," succeeded in completely removing the tumor with clear surgical margins, and performed immediate breast reconstruction using the patient’s own tissue, without the need for silicone implants or tissue expanders. This achieved advanced therapeutic, functional, and cosmetic outcomes.

The treatment involved a multidisciplinary team including breast surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiology, pathology, anesthesia, and nursing, following an integrated approach that prioritized patient safety and quality of care.

Dr. Nasreen bint Suleiman Al-Waalan, acting executive general manager of the hospital, stated that the successful operation reflects the hospital’s specialized medical expertise and highlights the integration of healthcare, education, research, and innovation within Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University.

She added that, with the support and supervision of University President Dr. Najla bint Abdullah Al-Tuwaijri, the hospital continues to advance its specialized services and provide patient-centered, high-quality healthcare, contributing to the Kingdom’s health transformation goals.
