A major environmental cleanup initiative titled “Our Sea, Our Responsibility” was launched today in Jeddah to safeguard the Red Sea’s marine ecosystems, a collaborative effort involving the Makkah Principality, the Saudi Red Sea Authority, the Border Guard, the Jeddah Municipality, the Saudi Water Sports and Diving Federation, the National Center for Wildlife, and the General Organization for Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea.
The initiative focused on removing hazardous seabed debris that poses a direct threat to coral reefs and marine biodiversity.
Specialized diving teams conducted underwater surveys and retrieval operations, followed by the rigorous sorting, documentation, and safe disposal of recovered waste under joint technical supervision.
The first day of the campaign yielded significant results in the push for a cleaner marine environment, successfully removing over half a ton of waste and general pollutants.
These efforts also addressed the threat posed by hazardous gear by recovering more than 4,000 meters of abandoned fishing lines, a major step toward protecting the Red Sea’s delicate underwater ecosystems.
