King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals Achieve Advanced Ranks in Global Competitions

A team of students from the College of Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) has won the second place in the worldwide competition for Imperial Barrel Award 2020 (AAPG-IBA) internationally and first place in the Middle East Region.

Dean of the College of Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Kaabi pointed out that the competition, which is organized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and held remotely, is about a project to evaluate an oil field, the possibility of its exploitation and identifying suitable drilling sites using the latest exploration and drilling methods to interpret the geological and geophysical information. He confirmed that this achievement reflects the university's reputation as a world-class center for teaching and research, the excellence of its students and the College's program, adding that KFUPM team was able to outperform students from six prestigious American universities that qualified to the global competition after winning local competitions over other American universities.

Furthermore, two students from the Petroleum Engineering Department have won in the SPE Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Student Paper contest, which was recently organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). Ibrahim Goma won 1st place in the master's division and Amjad Hassan won the 2nd place in PhD division. The Chairman of Petroleum Engineering Department Dr. Dhafer Al-Shehri praised the quality of the submitted research papers and pointed out that the top three students in each category in the contest have qualified for the SPE International Student Paper Contest that will be held during the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE 2020) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers in Denver, Colorado, USA next October.
