Two dead, 90 suffer ammonia poisoning after gas leak at Iraq fertilizer plant

Two people were killed and 90 others suffered from ammonia inhalation following a gas leak at a fertilizer plant in the Khor Al-Zubair area of Basra province, southern Iraq, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Abbas Maher, the district governor of Al-Zubair in Basra, stated that those affected included plant workers and residents from nearby areas, noting that most cases were mild and patients had been discharged from hospital.

Some other cases were referred to Al-Zubair Hospital for further medical observation.

Maher added that civil defense teams managed to fully evacuate the plant and rescue all workers trapped inside, while relevant authorities continue to monitor the incident and take necessary measures.
