Najran University showcases advanced AI system at workshop
Najran University highlighted its experience building and operating an advanced AI system at its data center during a government workshop.
Key Takeaways
AINajran University presented its experience in building and operating an advanced artificial intelligence system at its data center during the "Open-Source Language AI Models (LLMs)" workshop, organized by the Digital Government Authority with participation from several government entities.
Adel Al-Khalifi, Director of the Data Management Office and Head of the AI and Emerging Technologies Unit at the university, gave a presentation on the university's experience running open-source AI models locally. This approach ensures data remains within the university's domain and allows for expanding new use cases without relying on external cloud service providers.
The initiative included the development of several systems by the Deanship of Digital Transformation and Knowledge Resources team, covering AI model management, server monitoring, load balancing, permissions management, and usage tracking.
The university also showcased several projects based on this system, including an AI-powered data classification project, the "UniTwin" digital twin platform for students—which has created 5,943 digital twins since November 2025—as well as an AI platform for project management and a smart environment supporting scientific research.
The experience also involved using AI to enhance the university's electronic portal by automating content translation and generating image descriptions. So far, 22,025 out of 24,131 items have been translated, achieving a 91% completion rate, and 40,281 out of 44,074 images have been described at the same rate.
