US economic pressure on Iran is set to escalate, with upcoming sanctions expected to impact China and other countries trading with Tehran.
Key Takeaways
AIFadi Hilani, Director of the Middle East Program at the National Council in Washington, said the United States is intensifying its economic pressure on Iran to the maximum extent.
Hilani added, in a call with Al Arabiya FM, that the new sanctions will target countries and entities trading with Iran, including China, which is considering importing oil from Iraq and Brazil.
He noted that the US Treasury Department will impose a package of banking sanctions on those dealing with Iran on Monday, describing them as unprecedented. He also pointed out that the Chinese president is set to visit the US next week, but the current US administration is focused on increasing the cost for China if it chooses to import Iranian oil.
The Middle East Program Director added that the US approach toward China is very cautious, as Washington does not want to jeopardize the expected visit of the Chinese president to meet US President Donald Trump.
