Syrian Interior Ministry clarifies details of Rankous security operation

The Syrian Ministry of Interior has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances of the security operation carried out yesterday against a Daesh terrorist cell in the town of Rankous, in the Damascus countryside.

In its statement, the ministry said it is closely monitoring the reactions and questions raised by Rankous residents regarding the operation. It explained that the main objective was to execute arrest and detention warrants for suspects, based on precise intelligence information.

The ministry stated that upon arrival, the security forces were met with heavy and direct gunfire from cell members, resulting in the deaths of two officers and injuries to five members of the internal security forces. The statement noted that this necessitated a firm response to the sources of fire, in accordance with established engagement protocols.

The Syrian Interior Ministry added that initial investigations with the detainees are ongoing under the supervision of the relevant judicial authorities. It affirmed its commitment to announcing the results of the investigations and presenting evidence to the public once legal procedures are complete, stressing that the safety and security of Rankous residents remain a top priority.

The ministry also urged the public to verify information and await the results of the official investigation, warning against being misled by false narratives aimed at distorting the facts.

Two members of the internal security forces were killed and five others wounded on Thursday during a security operation conducted by internal security in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate, targeting a Daesh cell in Rankous.
