Iran may let Europe help clear Hormuz mines: Bloomberg

Iran is considering allowing European countries to participate in clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz, in what could mark a shift from its previous stance, as part of ongoing talks to restore shipping traffic in the vital waterway, Bloomberg reported, citing informed sources.

According to the sources, any European demining mission would depend on Iran providing security guarantees for participating military vessels, as well as the continuation of the current ceasefire. The mission would also require approval from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has previously led attacks on shipping in the strait.

One source noted that there is still disagreement within Iran's leadership, with some Revolutionary Guard members insisting that Tehran should handle the mine-clearing itself, rather than delegating the task to other countries.

The sources added that European involvement in mine removal could offer independent assurances to shipping and insurance companies about the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, following more than five months of reciprocal strikes. It could also support diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

In Washington, US Senator Marco Rubio said the current focus is on an agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that oil continues to flow through the strait, "which means it is open."

Rubio explained that negotiations between Oman and Iran are aimed at securing increased vessel passage through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the United States is involved in these discussions, which coincide with extended talks on Iran's nuclear program.

He noted progress in the nuclear negotiations, expressing hope for a final outcome soon, and reiterated that US President Donald Trump's position remains that Iran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed that talks with Oman are ongoing to organize safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, explaining that discussions focus on designating secure routes for vessels entering and leaving the strait.

Baghaei added that both technical and political talks are progressing positively, and that both sides are working to establish the necessary mechanisms for future arrangements to manage navigation in the strait.
