Search underway for 129 missing after ferry capsizes in Indonesia

Search operations are ongoing for at least 129 people still missing after a ferry capsized in rough weather in Indonesia's Java Sea on Sunday.

At least 108 people have been rescued and the bodies of six passengers have been recovered as the search expands around the vessel's last known location.

Officials said the ferry, carrying more than 240 people, was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan province on Borneo island.

I Putu Sudayana, head of the search and rescue office in Banjarmasin, said the captain had reported rough seas with waves up to three meters high before sending a distress call, and the vessel began to list.

Authorities later received information that the ferry had capsized.

Initial reports indicated the ferry's last known position was in the Java Sea, about 148 kilometers from Banjarmasin.

The ferry's passenger list showed it was carrying 243 people—213 passengers and 30 crew members—although it is common in Indonesia for the actual number of people on board to differ from the official manifest. The vessel was also transporting 89 vehicles.
