UK defense minister: Too early to speculate on Iran link to airbase incident

UK Defense Minister Wes Streeting said on Monday it would be unwise to speculate about Iran's involvement in the arrest of five men near a British airbase, according to Reuters.

British police on Sunday detained five men near RAF Fairford, a base used by US forces, on suspicion of offenses related to explosives and terrorism. The arrests followed a report of three vans approaching the military airport, which has been used to launch strikes on Iran.

US President Donald Trump stated that the suspects were planning to cause significant harm, noting that both British and American authorities had been investigating the case for some time.

Trump praised the efforts of British authorities, calling the arrests "an amazing job," and emphasized that cooperation between the two countries had yielded excellent results.

Police have not disclosed who they believe is behind the incident. However, a source familiar with the investigation told Reuters that an Iran-related motive remains the most likely, though possible involvement by Russia or Islamist extremists has not been ruled out.

The British government has authorized the United States to use RAF Fairford to carry out strikes on Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
