UN chief warns of escalation risks, urges restoration of navigation in Strait of Hormuz

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports of escalating tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, including attacks on commercial vessels and threats of further actions targeting maritime infrastructure and energy facilities.

Guterres emphasized the need to fully restore and respect the rights and freedom of navigation in and around the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric conveyed the Secretary-General’s call for all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions or rhetoric that could further inflame the already tense situation.

The Secretary-General warned that any further escalation could pose serious risks to civilians, regional stability, international peace and security, and the global economy. He urged all sides to make full use of diplomatic channels and resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation.

Guterres also affirmed the UN Secretariat’s readiness to support all credible efforts aimed at de-escalation and achieving a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
