US urges Iraq to rein in armed groups and control weapons

Sources told Al Arabiya on Monday that the United States has informed the Iraqi government of the need to complete efforts to control weapons and prevent armed groups from carrying out attacks on neighboring countries.

The sources added that Washington has hinted at possible measures against Iraq if it fails to address the weapons issue and stop factions from launching attacks on its neighbors.

They also noted that the US has signaled it could take steps related to dollar shipments to Iraq should there be no progress on controlling weapons.

According to the sources, Iraq has told the US side it will finalize the weapons control file through carefully planned steps.
