Mojtaba Khamenei appoints veteran IRGC leaders to top security posts

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, has appointed veteran and loyal commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to key security positions, a move observers see as a sign Tehran is preparing for a prolonged and more confrontational standoff with the United States.

The appointments, made on August 9 and 10, fill vacancies left by the deaths of several security officials during the ongoing conflict, with a focus on bringing back "old guard" figures known for their longstanding hostility toward Washington, according to Al Arabiya.

Among the most prominent appointees are Mohsen Rezaei, 71, former IRGC commander during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, and Hossein Taeb, 63, the former head of IRGC intelligence who was dismissed in 2022 under mysterious circumstances.

Implications of the new appointments

Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran, said these appointments indicate that Iran's leadership is adopting a more risk-ready and confrontational approach, reflecting Tehran's belief that a state of war will persist for the foreseeable future.

Brodsky added that Taeb's return signals the regime's concern over renewed domestic unrest amid a worsening economic crisis, suggesting the Basij forces are likely to play a central role in suppressing any potential protests.

The impact of these changes on diplomatic talks with the United States remains unclear, especially after the 60-day deadline for reaching an agreement expired. Negotiations are currently led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is seen as less hardline than the newly appointed security leaders.

Mojtaba Khamenei became Supreme Leader after the assassination of his father, Ali Khamenei, at the outset of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28. He has yet to appear in public, fueling speculation about his health and influence within the regime.
