China says cooperation with Iran complies with international law

China’s foreign ministry said that US sanctions and pressure on Iran cannot resolve issues, adding that such measures only serve to heighten tensions and escalate the situation, which benefits no party.

According to Al Arabiya, the ministry commented on Washington’s threats of sanctions against Iran, stating: “Beijing’s cooperation with Iran has always been conducted within the framework of international law.”

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, speaking at a press conference yesterday, was asked to comment on US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s warning that the United States may impose secondary sanctions on countries conducting trade with Iran. Lin responded that Beijing will closely monitor developments and will take necessary measures to protect its rights.

It is noteworthy that these Chinese statements come as the United States intensifies its pressure on Iran. US President Donald Trump has announced the start of “economic landing” procedures and maximum economic sanctions on Iran, alongside maritime measures to monitor shipping and impose restrictions on trade linked to Tehran.
