UN chief urges review of peacekeeping operations approach

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a reassessment of the approach to peacekeeping operations, emphasizing the need for Security Council unity, consistent political support, adequate resources, and the necessary capabilities for effective implementation.

Speaking before the Security Council during a session held yesterday, Guterres explained that the nature of conflicts has changed, peace agreements have become rarer and more fragile, and peacekeeping missions now face growing challenges, including attacks, targeting of civilians, and the use of drones and artificial intelligence, all while budgets and personnel are shrinking.

Guterres stressed that successful peacekeeping requires a realistic assessment of conditions on the ground, investment in peace, strengthened leadership, and efficient use of resources. He underscored the importance of renewing commitment to supporting peacekeepers and upholding the trust of the people they serve.
