Bab Al-Mandab crisis is a global issue, analyst warns, urging action against Houthis

Political analyst Fares Al-Beel said the crisis in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait is not just a Yemeni issue, but a regional and international one. He called on the international community to support Yemen's legitimate government in eliminating the Houthi militia.

Speaking in an interview broadcast on Al-Hadath, Al-Beel noted that the US administration is approaching midterm congressional elections. He said US President Donald Trump, by announcing that his administration had communicated with the militia, aimed to show that he was not the primary target. However, Al-Beel warned that if Bab Al-Mandab were to fall, it would be a defeat for the United States.

He added that the announcement of communication was intended to suggest that the initiator holds the reins and acts as a mediator, controlling the situation. But, Al-Beel said, Trump's statement was mainly a message directed at the American public.

Al-Beel continued that the militia is backed by the Iranian regime, which seeks to make the Houthis its traffic police in the strait. This, he said, is an Iranian message to all countries that Tehran is in control and now capable of steering the course of the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. More concerning, Al-Beel argued, is the international community's treatment of the issue as a variable to be managed, forgetting that the Houthis were previously classified as a terrorist group before reaching Bab Al-Mandab.
