US and China seek to bridge differences, says economic analyst

Economic analyst Tarek Al-Shami said the United States and China are working to narrow the gap on several issues, both economically and commercially as well as on geopolitical matters, despite ongoing differences between the two sides.

Speaking to Al Arabiya FM, Al-Shami explained that Washington and Beijing are seeking common ground and addressing outstanding issues in ways that could ease tensions, even as multiple points of contention remain.

He noted that US-Chinese disagreements remain broad and varied, but both sides are also trying to show a degree of alignment in their bilateral relations, which could help move forward on disputed issues and reach mutual understandings.

Al-Shami added that the current situation bears some resemblance to the Cold War era between the United States and the former Soviet Union, with strategic competition and disputes running in parallel with channels for dialogue and negotiation.

He believes that demonstrating some level of accord between Washington and Beijing could help resolve some of the outstanding issues.
