UN envoy: Negotiated settlement only viable path to end Sudan conflict

UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, has emphasized that a negotiated settlement remains the only viable path to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire and a sustainable resolution to the conflict. He called for the launch of an inclusive political process and concrete steps to de-escalate tensions and protect civilians.

Haavisto is continuing his visit to Khartoum, where he has taken part in meetings with representatives of the Quintet Committee, which includes the United Nations, African Union, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Arab League, and the European Union. He has also met with several Sudanese officials, civil society leaders, and political groups.

His discussions have focused on efforts to reduce violence and protect civilians, the release and exchange of detainees, and support for an inclusive political process leading to peace. Haavisto stressed that comprehensive dialogue is the key to a sustainable end to the conflict.

The UN envoy’s visit to Sudan is scheduled to continue until the end of this week.
