US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it has completed the orderly withdrawal of US personnel and equipment from Erbil Air Base on September 30, marking the end of Operation Inherent Resolve’s mission in Iraq.

In an official statement on its X account, CENTCOM said this move is part of a planned transition toward a bilateral defense relationship between the United States and Iraq. The Joint Task Force continues its mission, now based in Jordan, as US forces remain committed to defeating Daesh in Syria alongside coalition partners and the Syrian government.

According to CENTCOM, the Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve has provided advice, assistance, and support to partner forces in the fight against Daesh in both Iraq and Syria since CENTCOM established the unit in 2014.

Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of US Central Command, said: “I commend the outstanding performance of the tens of thousands of US military personnel, diplomats, and civilians who answered the call in Iraq. Thanks to your determination, sacrifice, and professionalism, Daesh no longer poses a structural threat to Iraq’s national security. Iraqi security forces, including the Peshmerga and other security units in the Kurdistan Region, now possess the capability, leadership, and operational independence to address threats to their homeland on their own.”

Erbil Air Base, located in northern Iraq, served as the main operational hub for the Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve, and hosted most of the 1,500 US and coalition troops supporting operations to defeat Daesh.

Cooper added: “As we withdraw and transfer full primary responsibility for Iraq’s security to the Iraqi government and the brave Iraqi people, US and coalition forces stationed throughout the region remain ready to respond to any threats that may arise from Daesh. Maintaining vigilance and readiness is essential to protect the US homeland and strengthen regional security.”
