Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani announced on Monday the appointment of Muzna Mamdouh Al-Atrash as adviser for peace affairs at the ministry. The move comes as part of efforts to reorganize Syria’s diplomatic work and address challenges related to stability and reconciliation after years of conflict, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Al-Atrash, who hails from Sweida province in southern Syria, was born in 1987 and has experience in community, humanitarian, and media work. She holds a degree from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in theater criticism, a diploma in cinematic sciences, and a bachelor’s in media from Al-Hayat Al-Jadida University.

Throughout her career, Al-Atrash has combined cultural and media work with community and humanitarian activism. She serves as chair of the board of the Muzn Organization for Development, Awareness and Giving. She is also a member of the UN-affiliated Syrian Women’s Advisory Board, the Arab Journalists Union, and the Syrian Artists Syndicate.

In the humanitarian field, Al-Atrash works as a trainer and volunteer with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, focusing on disaster response, first aid, and international humanitarian law.

Her appointment comes as Syria faces major political and social challenges after more than a decade of war, including community reconciliation, refugee returns, and reconstruction. Sweida, Al-Atrash’s home province, has emerged as a region of particular significance in the current Syrian landscape.

Since the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime in December 2024, Syria’s new authorities have begun reorganizing state institutions, including the Foreign Ministry, which has seen a series of new appointments. Al-Shaibani has led diplomatic efforts since December 2024, focusing on building foreign relations and expanding international engagement.

The ministry has not yet announced details of Al-Atrash’s specific duties or the files she will oversee, and it remains unclear whether she will lead internal reconciliation initiatives, coordinate with international organizations, or handle other diplomatic issues related to conflict resolution.
