Senior Syrian and Israeli officials held a meeting in Jordan on Sunday aimed at easing tensions between the two countries following the recent Israeli airstrike on Syria’s Abu Al-Duhur airbase, according to two sources cited by Axios.

The sources said Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Shibani met with Mossad Director Roman Gofman just days after the strike, which heightened tensions between Damascus and Tel Aviv.

Agence France-Presse reported that Al-Shibani and Gofman discussed establishing a joint "operations room" under US supervision, with the goal of reducing tensions and preventing escalation between Syria and Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office did not comment on the report, and there was no immediate response from the Syrian side.

The meeting took place amid a sensitive climate, as Israel said its strike on Abu Al-Duhur was prompted by concerns over possible Turkish military activity at the site. However, both Damascus and Ankara denied any arrangements to turn the base into a Turkish deployment site.

Al-Shibani had previously stated that Syria informed Israel the base would not become a Turkish facility, but the strike was carried out nonetheless.
