An earthquake with a magnitude as high as 8.0 stuck northern Peru in the early hours of Sunday morning, the United States Geological Survey reported, according to Reuters.

The quake, atan "intermediate depth" of around 110 kilometres, was felt around thecountry and even hundreds of miles away in the capital city of Lima, localauthorities reported.

There were noinitial reports of casualties or of significant damage.

Peru sits onthe so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the majority of the worldseismic activity occurs.
