Ronaldo blames Alvalade pitch for lackluster display against Wales

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to deliver the expected performance for Portugal against Wales, despite his team’s 1-0 victory courtesy of a João Félix goal in the UEFA Nations League. The result has renewed questions about the Portugal captain’s future with the national team and the postponement of his retirement decision.

The Al Nassr striker played 67 minutes in the match, which marked the start of Portugal’s campaign to defend their Nations League title. Ronaldo did not score, with one goal ruled out for offside, and missed several chances in front of the Welsh goal.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Ronaldo attributed part of his struggles during the game to the condition of the Alvalade pitch, home of Sporting CP, saying that the poor quality of the turf affected his ability to perform at his best.

The Portugal captain showed visible frustration after a weak shot in the 40th minute failed to find the net, making clear his dissatisfaction with the state of the pitch.

Ronaldo’s performance did not escape criticism, with A Bola highlighting global media reactions describing the 41-year-old’s display as “disappointing,” “disastrous,” and “stumbling.”

In contrast, João Félix received local praise for scoring the match’s only goal, securing victory for Portugal in Jorge Jesus’s first game as coach, while pressure mounted on Ronaldo amid ongoing questions about his international future.
