Donis hails Saudi players after opening Gulf Cup win over Kuwait

Saudi Arabia head coach Georgios Donis emphasized the importance of his side’s 1-0 win over Kuwait in their opening match of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, held at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Donis said securing victory in the first game was crucial, and he praised the fans for supporting the team from start to finish. He stressed the need to make better decisions in difficult moments and to capitalize on the chances created by the team.

Donis highlighted the importance of making the right choices inside the opponent’s penalty area, building players’ confidence and composure, and finding balance between different generations in the squad. He noted that some players need more playing time with their clubs to gain further confidence.

He also commended the performance of Hammam Al-Hamami, affirming his aim to instill confidence and calm in the players with each match. Donis added that Saudi Arabia will aim for another win in their next game against Oman.

For his part, Kuwait head coach Helio Sousa acknowledged that Saudi Arabia were the stronger side, explaining that his players are still gaining experience and will continue to develop and learn from their older teammates.

Sousa noted that Saudi Arabia’s experience from World Cup participation gives them an edge, while Kuwait needs time and fan support to build experience and improve in the coming period.

Regarding Youssef Nasser’s participation, Sousa explained that the player recently joined the squad and the coaching staff chose to introduce him at the right moment, given his ability to find space behind defenders and create opportunities through the middle.

He added that pressing the opponent in their own half requires both physical and mental readiness, which the coaching staff is working to develop within the Kuwaiti team. Sousa pointed out the difficulty of consistently executing the game plan throughout the match.
