Ireland goalkeeper refuses to face Israel, team in turmoil ahead of Nations League match

The Republic of Ireland national team faces mounting difficulties ahead of their UEFA Nations League match against Israel, after goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu informed his teammates he would not participate in the fixture scheduled for Sunday in Debrecen, Hungary. Reports suggest other players are also considering withdrawing, prompting internal discussions and disrupting the team's preparations.

The internal dispute led to the postponement of both the training session and the pre-match press conference. Players and coaching staff met to discuss the situation and seek a unified stance on participation. According to Irish media, a collective boycott was not initially planned, but the meeting became a forum to debate how to approach the match and whether to issue a joint statement.

Bazunu's decision comes amid growing pressure within the squad in recent days. Midfielder Jason Knight had previously called for the match to be cancelled, while more than 160 Irish athletes signed an open letter urging the team to boycott both fixtures against Israel in protest over the war in Gaza.

The controversy intensified following comments from head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson, who stated that the team "plays against genocide, not with it," referring to the match against Israel. His remarks drew a sharp response from the Israel Football Association, which accused the coach of "stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy," escalating the dispute into a public exchange.

Despite mounting pressure from within and outside the squad, the Football Association of Ireland has insisted the match will go ahead. In November 2025, the association voted to submit a formal request to UEFA's executive committee to suspend Israel's membership in European competitions.

However, the Irish association has continued to fulfill its Nations League fixtures, noting that failing to play could result in forfeiting matches and facing disciplinary action, including possible exclusion from the competition. The association later confirmed its commitment to completing all Nations League matches for the 2026–2027 cycle, despite ongoing controversy over games against Israel.

The Irish association has also requested that Ireland and Israel be kept apart in future European competition draws. UEFA has stated it will address such matters on a case-by-case basis, prioritizing security considerations when determining match arrangements.

The Israel vs. Ireland match is set for Sunday, September 27, at Nagyerdei Stadium in Debrecen, Hungary, as part of the Nations League. The Irish team enters the fixture amid internal divisions and pressure from athletes, fans, and activists calling for a boycott. Coach Hallgrímsson has previously acknowledged that players hold differing views on participation, but the team remains committed to playing.
