Residents of the Arabian Peninsula are anticipating the appearance of the Canopus star low on the southern horizon at dawn on Monday, August 23, 2026, in one of the region’s most renowned celestial signs of seasonal change.

Majed Abu Zahra, president of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, explained that the rising of Canopus just before sunrise marks the beginning of a transitional period in which the intense summer heat gradually subsides. Nighttime temperatures begin to moderate as the angle of the sun’s rays shifts, signaling the approach of the autumnal equinox.

Canopus, known in Arabic as Suhail, is the second-brightest star in the night sky after Sirius. Located about 310 light years from Earth, it belongs to the Carina constellation. The star has held special significance for Arabs since ancient times, with its appearance serving as a seasonal marker indicating the start of a new phase in the year and, in local tradition, the easing of extreme heat and changing weather conditions.

Abu Zahra noted that the appearance of Canopus itself does not cause weather changes, as the star is far too distant to have any climatic effect on Earth. Rather, its rising coincides with the natural annual changes resulting from Earth’s orbit around the sun and the tilt of its axis.

Canopus visibility and cultural significance in the Arabian Peninsula

Abu Zahra explained that Canopus remains invisible in areas north of approximately 33 degrees north latitude, but can be observed from much of the Arabian Peninsula, becoming more prominent further south.

While the main public anticipation and appearance is at dawn on Monday, August 23, the dawn of August 24 marks the astronomical return of Canopus to the sky, serving as a sign that the summer season is gradually giving way to autumn.
