Northern Border University rises in Nature Index 2026 for social and physical sciences

Northern Border University has achieved a new scientific milestone by advancing in the global Nature Index 2026 for the period from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The university ranked seventh nationwide in the social sciences and 13th in the physical sciences among academic and health research institutions in Saudi Arabia.

The Nature Index is one of the leading international benchmarks for measuring the quality of research output published in high-impact scientific journals. It tracks institutional contributions to international research articles, basing its methodology on the number of published articles and the extent of research contributions.

Stimulating research environment and institutional integration

Dean of Scientific Research at Northern Border University, Dr. Nasser bin Ayed Al-Rashidi, stated that this achievement reflects the university’s ongoing efforts to support and encourage faculty, researchers, and postgraduate students. He highlighted the creation of a stimulating research environment that enhances scientific output and boosts research competitiveness.

Al-Rashidi added that the university’s accomplishment is the result of integrated institutional work in scientific research and sustainable development, reflecting ongoing efforts to develop the research and innovation ecosystem. This, he said, has strengthened the university’s presence in international rankings and indices.

Nature Index criteria and significance

Al-Rashidi noted that the Nature Index objectively measures institutions’ scientific output by tracking contributions to high-quality scientific journals selected for their reputation by an independent group of researchers. The index’s data is regularly updated, allowing for the monitoring of collaborating institutions and countries and measuring the strength of their research partnerships.

Northern Border University has also achieved notable research presence in applied, health, and natural sciences, in addition to its progress in social and physical sciences, reflecting its ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and competitiveness of its scientific output both locally and internationally.
