Saudi Arabia urges shared global responsibility to safeguard maritime routes

Saudi Arabia told the United Nations Security Council that safeguarding maritime corridors and ensuring freedom of navigation is a shared international responsibility, calling for adherence to international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The statement was delivered by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, during a Security Council session on Houthi threats to navigation in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

Al-Wasel condemned Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, commercial vessels, and maritime passages, stressing the Kingdom’s right to protect its national security.

He noted that Saudi Arabia has launched a multinational maritime defense coalition to enhance maritime security and protect freedom of navigation amid growing threats to vital regional waterways.

Support for a political solution in Yemen

The Permanent Representative reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for de-escalation and efforts toward a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Yemeni crisis, affirming its commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

He emphasized the importance of the international community fulfilling its responsibilities to secure maritime routes, which would help protect global trade and supply chains, and maintain regional and international security and stability.
