Saudi Arabia Chairs 2nd Meeting of Arab Team Tasked with Negotiating with International Media Companies
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia chaired the Second Meeting of the Arab Negotiating Team with International Media Companies, which took place today in Riyadh.
Media experts from Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, the Council of Arab Information Ministers' technical secretariat, and the Arab States Broadcasting Union(ASBU) participated in the meeting.
The team discussed the executive plan for negotiations with international media companies, set a timeframe for implementation, and formulated a strategic direction with key global players in the media industry.
The members agreed on a mechanism to encourage companies to use age classification in digital content platforms, digital advertising, social media platforms, and search engines by establishing a regulatory framework for media content to combat content that promotes discrimination and racism, violates individuals' privacy, or insults the history or civilization of any Arab country.
These recommendations aim to enhance Arab content, defend Arab and Islamic causes against negative propaganda, protect children and youth from harmful content, address hate speech, fake news, and privacy violations, and preserve media rights in the advertising market.
The Assistant Secretary General and Supervisor of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, stated that this strategic direction represents a clear collective will to confidently engage in knowledge and communication society, protect Arab digital interests, and combat the discourse of terrorism, hatred, and discrimination to preserve our values.
This meeting is in line with the decision of the 53rd session of the Council of Arab Information Ministers in Rabat regarding the formation of a team to negotiate with international media companies.
The team includes experts with legal expertise and specialization in the digital and communications field to study all regulatory aspects related to dealing with global media companies based on a cohesive Arab vision and the executive procedures of the unified Arab strategy.
