Saudi Arabia Prevents Work under Summer Hot Sun

In light of the high temperatures on a number of cities in Saudi Arabia and to ensure the health and safety of workers, the Saudi Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MLSD), banned working under the hot sun along the summer season, from the fifteenth of June to the fifteenth of September.

The hours of banning work were set from 12 pm to 3 pm, as a part of the Ministry’s concern for the safety and health of workers and to avoid what may be caused by work during this period of exposure to direct sunlight, and may result in negative effects on health, such as being hit by sunstroke and heat stress.

The official spokesperson of MLSD, Khalid Aba Al-Khail, said that the Ministerial Decision No. 3337 stipulates that “a worker may not be employed in open work under the hot sun from 12 pm to 3 pm during the period between the fifteenth day of June to the end of the fifteenth day of September of each calendar year”.

Al-Khail added: “The decision excludes workers working in oil and gas companies, as well as emergency maintenance workers, to take the necessary measures to protect them from damages of the hot sun”,

The spokesman, Al-Khail pointed out that the decision excludes a number of governorates in some areas of Saudi Arabia, because of the different temperatures, where the temperature in some provinces will fall to levels that do not require a ban on work in the mentioned hours.

The MLSD’s branches will coordinate with the emirate of different regions to determine the need to implement the resolution in those areas and provinces, in accordance with the climatic conditions and temperature prevailing in the region during the banning period.
