Governor of the Madinah Region and Chairman of the Board of Madinah Region Development Authority Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz has sponsored the certification ceremony of Madinah City with the Gold Level of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cities Program. The certificate is accredited by the United Nations Human Settlement Program (UN-Habitat).
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Governor of the Madinah Region and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Madinah Region Development Authority Prince Saud bin Khaled bin Faisal, and Mayor of Al-Madinah Region and CEO of its development authority Fahad Al-Buliheshi.
Madinah is the first Saudi and Arab city to receive this recognition, and the third city in the world to complete the second of three phases of the international requirements of UN-Habitat’s SDG Cities Program.
The achievement reflects Madinah’s comprehensive baseline data assessment of the city’s progress on sustainable urban development, and its unparalleled commitment to the inclusive strategic vision and plan of transformative actions that will deliver the SDGs by 2030.
The Madinah Region Development Authority obtained the Silver Certificate of the same program a year ago.
Its steady progress, which saw it obtain the Gold Level this year, strengthens Madinah’s pioneering position in the field of localizing SDGs.
This is in line with Madinah’s human-centered smart city strategy that focuses on building a vibrant community with the objective of improving Madinah people’s quality of life and enriching its visitors’ experiences in a sustainable manner.
The collaborative effort exerted by the various government, private sector, and not-for-profit stakeholders is a translation of the level of superior care given by the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince to the Madinah Region, as part of the objectives of the Saudi Vision 2030.
