Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed the success of the Egyptian-Qatari mediation in reaching an agreement to implement a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip and to exchange hostages and prisoners between the conflicted parties.

Aboul Gheit expressed aspirations that the announced truce would lead to a full ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and an end to the Israeli aggression against the strip's civilian population.

He emphasised that the brutal Israeli aggression against Gaza does not represent a path to achieving security but rather increases the likelihood of violence in the future.

He also affirmed the importance of a comprehensive political solution to the Palestinian cause that is based on the visions of the two countries, as it remains the only way out of the recurrent cycles of violence in the Middle East.
