Saudi volcanic basalt recognized as global heritage stone by IUGS

The Saudi Geological Survey has announced that the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has officially recognized basalt from Saudi Arabia’s volcanic fields as a Global Heritage Stone, marking the first time a Saudi stone has received this distinction.

This recognition crowns the Survey’s scientific efforts to document the geological, historical, and cultural significance of basalt, which has shaped the natural landscape and cultural identity of western Saudi Arabia for thousands of years. Basalt has played a key role in traditional construction, human settlement, and economic activities, in addition to its scientific and research value.

Significance of Saudi volcanic basalt

Basalt is notable for its widespread presence, durability, and resistance to heat and erosion, making it a vital resource for infrastructure materials. It also has advanced uses in fiber production, composites, and insulation. Its economic value is further enhanced by the proximity of some quarries to road and rail networks, supporting efficient transport and reducing construction and maintenance costs.

Supporting national geological heritage

This achievement represents international recognition of Saudi Arabia’s rich geological heritage and strengthens efforts to preserve geological and natural heritage sites, support scientific research, and highlight national assets in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
