Study finds rising concerns over AI and declining user trust in UK

A recent study conducted by the Digital Futures Institute at King's College London and the UK Artificial Intelligence Organization has found increasing concern among Britons about the use of artificial intelligence, particularly regarding data privacy and security.

The survey, which included more than 2,000 participants, revealed that 42% have begun to limit their use of chatbot applications, while over half believe the risks of AI outweigh its benefits.

The report indicated that the most common reason for reducing AI use is concern over data privacy and regulatory compliance, while others prefer to stick with traditional working methods.

The proportion of those who believe AI's risks exceed its benefits rose to 52%, up four percentage points from the previous survey, while the share of those optimistic about the technology dropped to 34%.

Researchers noted that many participants feel uneasy because it is difficult to refuse the use of AI, with a majority believing it will be hard or impossible to avoid exposure to the technology even if they wish to.

The research team pointed out that people who choose not to use AI do not lack the necessary skills, but prefer to avoid the technology for reasons related to privacy and personal comfort.

Despite global stock markets rising on the back of AI company shares, major technology company executives continue to downplay the decline in public enthusiasm for the technology.

Jack Stilgoe of King's College London noted that the study's findings show even AI supporters are becoming more worried and hesitant to use it.

Meanwhile, Kate Devlin emphasized the importance of providing effective safeguards and tools that allow users to control when and how they use AI, and to opt out when necessary.
