Desert cobra helps maintain ecological balance in Northern Borders

The black desert cobra, also known as the desert cobra or Walterinnesia aegyptia, is a venomous snake species found in the desert environments of the Northern Borders region. It is an important part of the area's biodiversity, helping to regulate populations of various creatures, especially rodents, within the ecosystem.

This snake is distinguished by its shiny dark coloration and inhabits desert, semi-desert, and rocky areas. It is rarely seen due to its nocturnal habits and preference for living in burrows and crevices. Its diet consists mainly of rodents, as well as some reptiles and other small prey.

The importance of the black desert cobra in desert ecosystems

Nasser bin Arshid Al-Mijlad, president of the Aman Environmental Association in the Northern Borders region, explained that the black desert cobra helps maintain the natural balance of the desert environment by regulating the numbers of certain species, particularly rodents. He added that snake activity typically increases with rising temperatures during the warmer months, when they emerge from their shelters in search of food, making sightings more likely in the early evening hours of summer. Their activity decreases as temperatures drop in winter.

Al-Mijlad noted that the diverse landscapes of the Northern Borders region—including deserts, rocky areas, valleys, and ravines—provide suitable habitats for various reptile species. He emphasized the importance of protecting these creatures and their habitats.

Safety tips and guidance

He cautioned against approaching wild animals, including the black desert cobra, or attempting to handle or provoke them if encountered. It is important to keep a safe distance, as the snake may display defensive behavior if it feels threatened. He advised contacting the relevant authorities if a snake is found in populated areas.

Al-Mijlad stressed that raising awareness about biodiversity helps people understand the vital roles reptiles play in the environment, supporting the sustainability of the region's biodiversity.
