A study has identified three foods that top the list for microplastic contamination.

The research, conducted by scientists from the University of Toronto and Ocean Conservancy, found that three protein sources are the most contaminated with microplastics. The study also noted that switching brands or stores may not significantly reduce exposure to these particles, according to Russia Today.

The study examined 16 types of common protein products, including seafood, poultry, meat, and plant-based alternatives, and found that 88% of the samples contained microplastic particles.

Researchers detected at least one contaminated sample in every protein type studied. Breaded shrimp products coated with breadcrumbs were found to be the most contaminated protein product, containing 370 microplastic particles per serving, compared to just two particles in chicken breast.
