Saudi FDA warns against sadaab herb, highlights health risks for vulnerable groups

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has issued a warning about the health risks of using the sadaab herb, also known as al-fijl, which is often used for decoration and as an insect repellent but poses significant health dangers, particularly for certain groups.

The authority stated on X that this herb, scientifically known as Ruta graveolens L, is considered highly hazardous and should be completely avoided in specific health conditions.

It stressed that pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as individuals with liver or kidney diseases or blood clotting disorders, should not use sadaab due to the risk of severe complications.

Reported side effects of sadaab include extreme fatigue, sleep disturbances, dizziness, nausea, intestinal cramps, and abdominal pain, according to the authority.

Sadaab is an aromatic plant native to the Mediterranean region and southern Europe, and is commonly used in some communities for ornamental purposes and to repel insects.
