Farms across the Asir region are currently supplying abundant quantities of pomegranates to local markets during the peak of the annual harvest season, revitalizing commercial activity and delivering significant economic returns for farmers and local families. This comes as part of efforts to diversify local income sources and develop agricultural holdings in the region.

Statistics from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture show that Saudi Arabia is home to more than 1.3 million fruit-bearing pomegranate trees, producing over 39,700 tons annually. Asir plays a leading role in meeting the growing demand for this fruit, offering wide investment opportunities for farmers to enhance the marketing of crops and value-added processed products.

Pomegranate festival creates opportunities for local families

The production surplus has stimulated tourism and commercial activity through marketing platforms, including the sixth Pomegranate Festival in Sarat Abidah, which features 25 farmer booths and six booths for local families. The festival has generated substantial financial returns by providing direct sales outlets to consumers, and has encouraged processing industries such as pomegranate molasses and natural juices, creating sustainable job opportunities for local families.

Technical support and competitive advantages for Asir pomegranates

Hassan Al-Wadayi, an agricultural engineer and researcher at the National Center for the Prevention of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa), said Asir pomegranates benefit from ideal environmental conditions and fertile soil, enhancing their market value and competitiveness. He added that Weqaa is intensifying technical support to ensure fruit safety and reduce post-harvest losses and waste, helping maximize farmers' profits in line with Saudi Vision 2030 goals for food security and rural economic development.

Al-Wadayi also noted that pomegranates are highly valued both medically and economically, representing a promising investment option due to sustained demand in local and medical markets. Their high antioxidant content and richness in essential vitamins and minerals contribute to public health benefits.
