Unemployed man rents Cairo courtroom, poses as judge in fraud scheme

Egyptian authorities have revealed details of an unprecedented crime that sparked widespread debate on social media, after an unemployed man posed as a judge to defraud citizens in Cairo.

Investigations showed that the suspect conspired with three employees at a capital city court, paying them a $60,000 (3 million Egyptian pounds) bribe to gain access to a courtroom after official hours.

The employees allowed the suspect to wear a judge’s sash and record videos and photos inside the courtroom, lending an air of legitimacy to his claims.

The suspect then posted these materials on his social media accounts, claiming to be a member of the judiciary.

He used this appearance to attract victims, convincing them he had the influence to resolve complex legal matters in exchange for money.

Authorities located and arrested the suspect, and legal action was taken against the three employees involved.

Officials ordered the freezing of the suspect’s bank accounts and assets, and are reviewing the seized videos, photos, and conversations with victims to determine the number of people affected.

The measures also include seizing forged documents and summoning the employees for questioning in light of the suspect’s confessions.
