AlUla emerges as global tourism destination with year-round experiences

AlUla is cementing its prominent place on the global tourism map, drawing on a heritage that spans thousands of years and a diverse natural and cultural landscape. The region boasts archaeological sites, dramatic rock formations, lush agricultural oases, arts, and a wide range of tourism experiences. This comes as World Tourism Day is marked on September 27 each year, highlighting the vital role of tourism in the economy, society, and culture.

AlUla offers a unique model where history, nature, and culture intersect. Its location along ancient caravan routes made it a crossroads of civilizations, with remnants of these eras still visible in its archaeological sites, inscriptions, tombs, and historic architecture, all set amid a varied landscape of mountains, valleys, and oases.

Archaeological sites and world heritage

The archaeological site of Hegra stands at the heart of AlUla’s historical landscape, as the first Saudi site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It features outstanding examples of Nabataean civilization and rock-carved architecture. Other sites, such as Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, further illustrate AlUla’s long-standing cultural legacy.

The Old Town connects visitors to the memory of the place, with more than 900 mud-brick houses dating back around seven centuries. The town was selected as part of the UN World Tourism Organization’s “Best Tourism Villages” initiative, recognizing its heritage value and the efforts to preserve its architectural identity.

AlUla’s international profile has been reflected in several tourism and travel awards and rankings in recent years, underscoring its growing stature on the world stage. These strengths are complemented by efforts to preserve its natural and cultural heritage while developing the destination in a way that balances protection of historic sites with visitor access.
