King Abdullah International Medical Research Center Conducts Only Study in the World for Treating MERS

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (KAIMRC) conducted the only study in the world with a third phase of clinical studies, related to the treatment of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

This study was widely echoed globally, as this study was related to a group of 43 patients, compared to a similar group, 52 patients.

Nine hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia participated in this study; King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah, King Abdulaziz Medical City in Al-Ahsa, Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Riyadh, Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh, King Abdullah Medical Complex in Jeddah, King Fahd Hospital in Hofuf, Asir Central Hospital, and King Khaled Hospital in Najran, started at the end of 2016, while the last patient enrolled in the study in the first quarter of 2020, as the study revealed the effectiveness of antivirals, as the death rate decreased to 28% compared to 44% in the group that did not take treatment, and the death rate decreased to 80% if treatment was used during the first seven days of the onset of symptoms.
