The year 2020 marks the culmination of a five-year US$71 billion spending plan by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health, in what has been a sustained government effort to grow the healthcare sector in the Kingdom.

At the start of this milestone year nobody could have imagined how the healthcare industry, and everyone in it, would be thrust to the forefront of the global conversations, but here we are.

The healthcare sector has been a top priority in the Kingdom because our nation’s leadership recognised, early on, not only the growth opportunities for economic diversification, but also the pivotal role this industry plays in ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.

We are a country blessed with a youthful population, yet in recent years with demographic shifts that happen with time, we have seen a significant increase in the number of citizens move into the over 60 years age bracket.

Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Transformation Programme emphasise on healthcare development, withthis industry receiving 15.6% of the national budget last year, making it the recipient of the third largest share of expenditure in 2019.

In recent years, the government has also been enlisting private sector involvement to drive the growth of the Kingdom’s healthcare industry throughincreased efficiencies and more access to care at lower costs.

By introducing Public Private Participation (PPP) models, the government has unlocked the value in the health system and fast-tracked healthcare reform by increasing private sector contributions.

However, there are also various factors that are pivotal to the success of these efforts including the adoption of advanced technology and creating a talent pool of healthcare professionals in and from the Kingdom.

The healthcare sector, especially in the face of the current COVID-19 crisis, requiresan increased pool of skilled national workforce.

In recent years, we have seen major effortsunderway in the Kingdom to provide advanced educational training through new medical collegesto create a talent pipeline frontline worker. The PPP models adopted by the government, will then see graduates put to work in the private sector.

Recent global events have taught us that we are all in this together, and the same rings true for the progress and prosperity of our nation. Every Saudi Arabian citizen has an important role to support the sustained growth and prosperity of our country, and hence their individual futures.

As a Saudi woman, I have chosen to play my part byhelping empower my fellow citizens, by facilitating their placement into jobs that are pivotal to the growth of our country’s healthcare sector.
