The cause of the fire at Paris' landmark Notre-Dame Cathedral is still not known and authorities are continuing their probe into how it started, French junior interior minister Laurent Nunez said on Tuesday.

"Thefire is under control but not totally extinguished," Nunez told a newsconference just outside Notre-Dame.

A massive fire consumed the cathedral on Monday, gutting its roof and stunning France and the world.

Firefighters saved the main bell towers and outer walls from collapse before bringing the blaze under control.

Meanwhile, Nations expressed solidarity with France after the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral and offered their support for the recovery.

Monday's fire collapsed the spire and burned through the roof of the 12th-century building, sparking an outpouring of grief and reminiscing of visits to the Parisian landmark.

President Donald Trump called the cathedral "one of the great treasures of the world."
