Death toll from collapsed quarantine hotel in China rises to 29

The final missing person trapped in a collapsed hotel being used as a coronavirus quarantine facility in eastern China was found dead on Thursday, bringing the accident’s death toll to 29, according to state media.  Xinjia Hotel, in the Licheng district of Quanzhou, collapsed and trapped a total of 71 people, dpa reported.

Rescuers were able to save the 42 other people, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The seven-storey building, constructed seven years earlier, was undergoing renovations on the lower floors when the accident occurred, according to local media reports.

Local authorities said they found “serious problems” in the approval of the construction and renovation work at the hotel.

China on Thursday reported 15 new coronavirus cases, which is its lowest number since the daily reporting on infections began seven weeks ago and brings the number of infections above 80,700. This includes 3,169 deaths.
