Afghanistan announces at least seven policemen dead after Taliban attack

A Taliban attack on a police checkpoint in Afghanistan's northern province of Takhar early Tuesday morning has left at least seven policemen dead, a source to DPA said.

"The attack on the checkpoint wasaround 1:30 am (2100 GMT Monday) in Khawja Bahawuddin district of the province,"provincial governor spokesman Mohammad Jawad Hejri said.

"The Taliban also suffered heavycasualties in the attack while the exact number of casualties was unclear,"Hejri added.

"At least 18 Taliban fighters, including two important commanders, have died in different firefights over the past week in Takhar,"

"A Taliban attack on an Afghan army base in western Farah province on Sunday evening left between 20 to 25 Afghan national army soldiers dead," provincial council member Shah Mahmood Naemi said.

Naemi said at least two others weretaken hostage in the attack that took place in Gulistan district on an armybattalion base.
