Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to Russia next week to meet his counterpart Vladimir Putin, in a move aimed at accelerating the implementation of bilateral agreements and strengthening economic and political cooperation between the two countries, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Friday.

Energy, transport, trade, and electricity projects top the agenda for cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, alongside coordination on regional and international developments, including Middle East issues and economic and nuclear collaboration.

The upcoming visit follows talks between Pezeshkian and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during Lavrov's visit to Tehran on October 19, which focused on ways to speed up the implementation of signed agreements and turn political understandings into practical results.

During the meeting, the Iranian president stressed the importance of enhancing political and diplomatic coordination with Moscow, expressing hope that his upcoming visit would lead to tangible progress in implementing existing agreements rather than relying solely on political understandings.

Relations between the two countries are based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed by Pezeshkian and Putin in Moscow in January 2025. The 20-year agreement covers cooperation in defense, security, energy, trade, and transport, as well as coordination on international issues.

The treaty came into effect in October 2025, but does not include a commitment to mutual military defense, according to Reuters.

Tehran and Moscow are seeking to expand economic cooperation and activate signed agreements amid Western pressure and regional tensions. Recent discussions have prioritized energy, transport, trade, and electricity generation projects, in addition to addressing regional and international issues.

The talks between Pezeshkian and Putin are expected to provide an opportunity to follow up on existing agreements and explore ways to expand cooperation in priority sectors, as well as coordinate positions on international and regional developments.

Implementing joint projects and turning agreements into practical steps remain key issues on the cooperation agenda between the two countries in the coming period.
